Here's a look at what's happening in Northern Virginia this weekend. Some of my favorite places are kicking off the holdiay season with tree lighting ceremonies. Have a great weekend, whatever you end up doing! 

Friday November 17th

Turkey Time Campfire: Claude Moore Park, Sterling, 1:30 – 5:45. Practice turkey calls as we wonder the trails. See where these majestic fowl frolic. After the walk enjoy a campfire and roast delicious marshmallows. Free, registration required.

Holiday Kick-off Celebration: Tysons, 6pm – 8:pm. Programming will include Santa ringing in the season, music and dance performances, complimentary s’mores and hot chocolate bar, pop-up Holiday market. Free and open to the public.

Pre-Turkey Quarter Horse Show: Frying Pan Farm Park, Herndon Nov. 17 – Nov 19. See some of the best horses in Virginia compete for points before heading to Congress.

Saturday November 18th

Herndon Turkey Trot 5K Race: This cross country 5K scenic run is a pre-Thanksgiving tradition. This year includes a costume contest (both individual and group categories), door prizes, top 3 M/F awards.

Alexandria Cider Festival: Old Town Alexandria, 1pm - 5pm. Tickets include cider tastings, a souvenir glass, and live music. $55 in advance, $65 at the door, $25 for designated driver. 21 and older only.

2023 Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony: Market Square, Old Town Alexandria, 6pm – 8pm. The Town Crier will call everyone to gather around the tree to help countdown to the lighting. Then, after 7pm enjoy a singalong at the tree while Santa and Mrs. Claus walk the Square and visit with families until 8pm. Admission is free, and the event will occur rain or shine.

Annual Old Town Alexandria Cookie Crawl: Nov. 18 – Nov 19. Receive a commemorative tin and stop by 25 retailers on the crawl to receive a cookie at each location. Tickets are limited; registration is required.

Holidayfest Annual Tree Lighting: Occoquan, 6pm. The New Dominion Choraliers will create a festive ambience at the gathering. Once the tree is lit, mosey through our new pop-up market toward River Mill Park. From 5pm to 8pm, fire pits will be burning and ready for visitors to roast marshmallows. S’more packets, hot cocoa, cider, plus many other yummy delights will be available for purchase.

Fairfax Station Railroad Museum FallFest: 12:30pm – 5pm. Join FSRM as they host the original Bavarian Dance Group of Washington ‘Alt Washingtonia’ for dancing, yodeling, cowbell ringing, Alphorns, and traditional German Food and Crafts. Admission: Adults (13 and up) $5, Youth (5 to 12) $4, Children 4 and Under are Free. Senior and Military Discount Admissions $4.
